About the Show

H.M.S. Pinafore, Gilbert & Sullivan’s nautical comedy set to some of the duo’s most infectious lyrics and melodies, is a tale of Love Across Class Boundaries, of Rousing Patriotism, and of How To Employ The Unqualified. Louisville’s finest performers will gleefully highlight Gilbert & Sullivan’s topsy-turvy operetta.

About the Iroquois Amphitheater

The Iroquois Amphitheater is a state-of-the-art, handicapped-accessible theater with seating for 2,366 in Iroquois Park. Under the management of Metro Parks, the Iroquois Amphitheater produces and hosts musicals, concerts, festivals, movie nights, graduations, and other performing arts and cultural programs. The Amphitheater was built in the spring of 1938 through federal Works Progress Administration labor.

From 2000 to '04, the Amphitheater was modernized; the 1938 stagehouse was carefully restored and material was saved and re-used in the renovation, preserving the theater’s historic and unique character. The Iroquois Amphitheater offers greatly expanded opportunities for the highest quality arts entertainment. The Iroquois Amphitheater is the official amphitheater for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society will be reserving a block of tickets for each performance – all seats $10. If you would like to join us for the show, please e-mail tickets@gsslou.com or call (502) 439-6007 and give your name, contact info, number in party and which night you wish to attend. All reservations must be received and confirmed by August 3.

Group rates are also available for parties of 15 or more. For more information, please call the Iroquois Amphitheater at (502) 368-5865.

"Fun Facts" from Director Gregory Maupin:

• People in the Pinafore cast have worked with seemingly every blasted company in town including: Actors Theatre, Le Petomane, Necessary Theatre, theatre 502, Pandora Productions, Kentucky Opera, Savage Rose, The Alley, Voces Novae (and of course, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society).

• A few slight alterations to the script have been made, but only in the form of some lines Gilbert added to his 1909 children's book version of the story ( that we think are funny) as well as a few that were cut before opening (that we think are funny)./br>/br> • The goal is to be, shall we say, respectful without being too reverential. The belief is that it's a comedy, but that some of the standard, traditional Savoy gags haven't aged as well as others. The expected is never quite as enjoyable as the un-, comically speaking.

Volunteers Needed

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society will be providing ushers and hosting a souvenir table at H.M.S. Pinafore. Please contact the Society at (502) 439-6007 or gsslou@gmail.com.

Save the Date: Pirates of Penzance Sing-a-long September 28th

Third Lutheran Church on Frankfort Avenue will be hosting our Pirates of Penzance Sing-a-long (REBOOT Edition) on Friday, September 28th during the Frankfort Avenue Trolley Hop. While many cast members from the February Sing-a-long will be returning, we may be seeking a few replacements. Watch for information on auditions and chorus rehearsals in August.
