TheatreLouisville Commentary: The Invisible Reviewer

The Wall Street Journal’s Terry Teachout is an outstanding reviewer. Writing for the most discriminating of readerships, he travels the nation to review fine theatrical productions, knowing that only a tiny percentage of his readers will even be close enough to visit those theatres — yet he makes us “see” the productions in all of their uniqueness and strength. His own persona never gets in the way.

Lately, several local reviews have been all about the reviewer, not about the production. In cases where extraordinary performances were given, this was especially irksome.

A good reviewer, like a good director, should be invisible, seen only through his or her work. Anything else is a misdirected view, indeed.
