"When I'm worried I can't sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep, and I fall asleep counting my blessings....." That lyric written by the late, great Irving Berlin, and recorded by Bing Crosby in 1954, was one of the most memorable of many memorable moments during Derby Dinner Playhouse's production of White Christmas. White Christmas (the play) was adapted from the 1954 film version starring Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. The Director, Lee Buckholz, along with the cast and crew did an amazing job bringing this show to life. Brian Bowman (Bob Wallace) and Matthew Brennan (Phil Davis) were excellently cast as the leads for his show and did their part in keeping the audience on edge waiting for more.
The show starts off at the end of World War II and quickly jumps 10 years down the road as it follows two GI's, Bob and Phil, who became full-time entertainers after the war. On their way to sunny California, fate intervenes, and thus begins the romance, confusion and action that lead us to our eventual resolution. In between all of that is a myriad of wonderful singing and dancing. The choreography was wonderful. I had never heard such thunderous clapping, over and over again, during several of the dance numbers (and I go to dance recitals every year). This credit not only goes to the cast but to the choreographer, Barbara F. Cullen. The only regret my wife and I had was that our children were not with us to experience the event. This is a great holiday show, and you should "Count Your Blessings" that you still have time to go see it!
