Peer Reviews Sylvia A review by Kevin F. Temple Entire contents are copyright © 2007 Kevin F. Temple. All rights reserved.
Move over, Dr. Doolittle, here comes Sylvia. She just happens to be a dream come true. Who could ask for anything more than a dog that speaks English? I often wondered what would happen if we could talk with the animals. Well, Sylvia (played by Katie Doyle) puts things into perspective when a professional businessman, Greg (played by Roger Fristoe), is befriended by this lovable dog. Taking Sylvia as one of his own, they quickly become inseparable. This making the home life a little rough, wife Kate (Candy Thomas) quickly becomes distraught when the dog begins to get more attention than she does. Greg leaves work early to be with Sylvia, taking her to the park and almost having a "real relationship" with the dog. The human couple seeks help from a marriage counselor (played by Tom Pettey), and amazingly enough, the counselor -- being a dog-owning park regular -- also aids in the corruption of Sylvia. Director Mike Seely says, "It’s been a while since I’ve had this much fun with a show. I’ve looked forward to every rehearsal." He should be proud of the cast he has put together, for they complement each other well. At times, the chemistry seems a little lacking between the characters of Greg and Kate, but that could be because a certain Sylvia is in the picture. My hat goes off to Katie Doyle for her enthusiasm as Sylvia. As she brings to life the mannerisms of dog-talk, she makes you want to go home and look at your little bundle of fluff and say, "I hear you, I know what you’re saying," and actually mean it. If you’re looking for a lighthearted evening out, and have a soft spot for little furry friends, maybe you should look into checking out Sylvia, and perhaps you too can learn what man's best friend is trying to say.
