Butterfingers Angel, Mary and Joseph, Herod the Nut,
and the Slaughter of 12 Carols in a Pear Tree

When I was a young girl, I first noticed play listings in the newspaper. I remember noticing the name of this production and I was instantly curious and amused by the length and tongue-in-cheekiness of the title. After making the long thirty-minute drive from St. Matthews to Corydon, Indiana, my friend and I were greeted by a little town and an even smaller theater.

The Hayswood Theatre offers delightful, family-friendly entertainment with Butterfingers Angel, Mary and Joseph, Herod the Nut, and the Slaughter of 12 Carols in a Pear Tree.

As far as Christmas plays go, this show fits the bill of your standard pageant where children are dressed up as animals and around every corner is a carol waiting to be sung. And I loved it. True, Friday was the beginning of the holiday shopping season, and perhaps I was drunk off of Black Friday sales, but everything about this family-friendly show worked for me.

Charles Swarens and Debbie Smith were strong leads as Joseph and Mary who, in this production, are thrown into an unexpected pregnancy and don't always get along. Justin Emmett was a delight as an awkward Angel sent down to earth to deliver the news to Mary about her pregnancy. Allen Platt stole the show as King Herod, who truly was a nut. Chris Wells, Scott Smith and Brandon Williams were funny as the three lost kings as well as Mary's buffoonish brothers. I must give mention to Theodore and Madelyn Copperwaite as well; these kids stole the show as the sheep and cow.

The Hayswood Theatre should give itself a pat on the back for a job well done. The space they worked with was small but they utilized it to the best of their abilities. The piano played in the background was in tune, and the singing was heartfelt and festive. Though it's a bit of a drive to Corydon from Louisville, it's worth the holiday cheer.
