Horseman

Washington Irving created a wonderful ghost short
story about a town called Sleepy Hollow. This town
is believed to be haunted by several ghosts
from the graveyard, and the Headless Horseman is
by far the scariest of these. Said
to have been an old pirate who lost his head to
a cannonball, he rides at night in search of it
— or of a worthy replacement.
The Children's Theatre of CenterStage put together
a wonderful interpretation of this classic tale.
I was surrounded by a roomful of children and
their parents, and watched them all listen attentively
to the show on stage. The music-to-voice levels
were great for a large portion of the show, although
there was a noticeable slight in the singing from
time to time, as if a mic cue had been missed.
The lighting was wonderful, and the smoke effect
really impressed the kids, with the exception of
one or two coughs when the smoke flowed into
the audience.
Matt Shuster played a great Brom Bones, the
over-muscled wannabe suitor of the young lady
Katrina, played by Emily Fields, whose feet and
ankles were the envy of everyone. The nervous
schoolteacher Ichabod Crane was well hosted by
Sam Mannino. The cast on the whole did a tremendous
job keeping the story lively to the younger audience,
which is a credit to director Sandra Simpson.
It's getting closer to the holidays, and if you're
looking for an opportunity to take the kids to
see some great entertainment and culture at
the same time with the performing arts, I highly
recommend seeing CenterStage's The
Headless Horseman —
but beware, you might want to keep one hand on
your head, just in case someone else might be looking
for one.
