Chalk up another strong performance by an all-female cast.

Walden Theatre's very engaging presentation of It's All Greek . . . is composed of a prologue and cameos of legendary ancient Greek women drawn out of an incredible six plays. From the self-manifestations of Earth and Sky, and throughout, inventive choreography is employed to place the Players and Chorus in a variety of strategic locations--even behind the audience, with Chorus voices seeming to come from the Aethers--as well as conveying the appendages of pre-Titanic creatures, the other-worldliness of the Cyclops, and, somehow, the sound of many more marching feet than were actually there. And, while it may appear a simple charm, the clever use of masks imparted an ambiance of Greek theater while differentiating the featured character from Chorus.

Through a moving portrayal of the origins and conflicts inherent to the ancient Greek Pantheon, the audience is primed to feel more fully the cataclysmic struggles paralleled in the lives of such as Medea, Hecuba, Helen, Electra, and Clytemnestra. There, we are treated to first-person glimpses into their passions, logic, rationalizations, and madness, in every sense of that word–despite however history may have judged them.

So fascinating was this show that, for all its superb content, its all-in-One-Act seemed to transpire in not much more than a twinkling of an eye. That kind of time-compression felt fostered by the sense of being transported out of the present and into the lives of our ancient fore-mothers. Virtual laurels to Ms. Havens for her splendid Adaptation and Direction, and bravissimi to the Walden Theater and Ladies, all.

It is respectfully suggested that performers at the Walden be encouraged to project their voices outward. It seems a peculiarity of the acoustics there that, in the few scenes where characters addressed others lying on the stage, hearing the dialogue became quite difficult--and one would not wish to miss a word.
