Kentucky Theatre Association's Conference and Community Theatre Festival

I am reposting information from Doug Shutte's recent email to us about the Kentucky Theatre Association's upcoming conference and festival. Sounds like lots of fun!

"If you are interested in bringing your high school to the festival, registration is filling up! Please register soon.

On the professional development side, this November’s slate of presenters will be one of the best assembled in years! You won’t want to miss this low-cost, high-reward day of development.

Community Theatres: With SETC in Lexington in the spring, there may never be a BETTER time to perform at the conference!

This year’s conference will be held November 13-15, 2009 on the campus of Morehead State University. Conference information and registration will be available soon on the KTA website: www.theatreky.org

The Community Theatre Festival will be held Saturday, November 14. If there are more than six entries we will present on Friday, as well.

Benefits of participating in the festival:

  • Statewide exposure for your organization
  • Opportunity to see what is happening across the Commonwealth
  • Participation in a statewide festival will validate the organization at the local level

Each participating community theatre must be an officially organized community theatre for at least one year and be a member of KTA. (KTA membership is included in Conference registration)

Entrants may enter a one-act or a cutting of a larger work.

Time guidelines are: 10 minutes to set up stage, maximum of 60 minutes acting time, 10 minutes strike. (This is strictly timed.)

Entrants must submit written proof of:

  • permission to perform the play/musical
  • permission to do the cutting (if needed)
  • proof of royalties paid
  • permission to perform any music not in public domain
  • proof of royalties paid for any music not in public domain
  • actor and company affidavits

Entrants must submit 4 copies of the script (no photo-copies allowed)

Although this is an off-year for the American Association of Community Theatre Festival (AACT), KTA adheres to their festival guidelines. The official site for rules and regulations is: www.aact.org,"

    Meet Chris Hancock

We have another new contributor to TheatreLouisville. Chris Hancock is a recent graduate of the Youth Performing Arts School as a Theatre Major/Musical Theatre Minor here in Louisville. You may have seen Chris in shows at YPAS, Clarksville Little Theatre (he's currently there in Pippin), Music Theatre of Louisville, and Heartbeat Community Theatre, to name a few. He is the owner/director of Apex Theatre Company, a new arrival to the Louisville theatre scene. Chris has studied with students of Kristin Linklater and her voice training, Anne Bogart's ViewPoints, Eugenio Barba and his theatre movement technique, and several acting techniques of Sandy Meisner, Stella Adler, Uta Hagen and Bertolt Brecht. He has written countless reviews and literary analyses on theatre history, period styles, acting techniques, and plays.

Chris likes to pick the brains of directors in his seemingly unquenchable thirst for theatre knowledge. He recently interviewed Georgette Kleier about her experiences in directing The Importance of Being Earnest, and is glad to share it with our readers. Go here to read it.
